What to Look For In a Professional Real Estate Agent

In every town or city, there are multiple real estate agencies from which to choose when you are buying or selling property. With so many realtors and brokers working in the market, it’s difficult to know who is going to be the right fit for you or will be the most effective in your real estate endeavor. Use these simple tips to select a professional real estate agent:

  1. Find someone with local knowledge. A real estate agent with knowledge of the community, school districts, neighborhoods, etc. is worth his/her weight in gold. It’s beneficial to have a community expert on your side: he or she can easily determine market values, make recommendations and will provide advice that agents with less local familiarity cannot.
  2. Look for an agent who is honest and trustworthy. While it’s challenging to know up front whether an agent is bursting with integrity, it’s pretty easy to find out when you check with his references. It also helps when you are referred by good reviews from past clients.
  3. Select an agent who communicates consistently. Because you need to know immediately when a buyer is interested or your “dream property” goes on the market, your agent needs to be communicating with you regularly. Additionally, you need an agent who explains the real estate process well and helps you understand every step.
  4. Choose an agent who has experience and credentials. Generally, experts recommend picking an agent with at least five years experience in the market. Additionally, check on an agent’s licensing and credentials to make sure he’s qualified in your area.

These are some basic tips for choosing an agent. Check out other hints from Bankrate for more information.
